A Brief History

1919- Bone & Joint Hospital began with the dream of a young physician returning home from serving in World War I. When Dr. Earl D. McBride returned home, he began treating children and adults with orthopedic afflictions.

To further his vision, he spent a year in New York City studying at the Hospital for Special Surgery, also known as the Hospital for the Ruptured and Crippled.

1923- Dr. McBride opened his orthopedic practice in Oklahoma City at 215 N.W. 10 th Street.

1926- During the Great Depression, Dr. McBride’s care gained a reputation for excellence and he purchased what would become the first location of Bone & Joint Hospital at 717 N. Robinson Street.

Reconstruction Hospital


1938- Dr. McBride quickly outgrew his location on Robinson and Bone & Joint Hospital moved to a new building on N.W. 10 th and Dewey.

1943- The American Board of Orthopedic Surgery approved the hospital as a training institution for orthopedic surgery.


1947- Because of the increased need for additional space, the hospital was enlarged and bed capacity was doubled.

1956- Dr. McBride retires and his entire interest in the clinic and hospital was purchased by the remaining partners.

1979- After experiencing more growing pains, a new building is built and the current 102-bed facility is opened. The original building is taken down and replaced with the parking garage.


Current Hospital


1995- Bone & Joint Hospital is acquired by SSM Health Care.

2006- SSM Health Care and Healthcare Partners Investments LLC (HPI) announced partnership in ownership of Bone & Joint Hospital with SSM Health Care holding 51% interest and HPI holding 49%.
